A Hard Lesson

I lie and watch you in the early morning light,
Drinking in the lines, the curves that I know so well,
The ones that are no longer mine, that so briefly were,
I long to touch you, my hand reaches, to fall back once more.

Does she know I wonder, does she care?
The pain I felt when I gave you over,
The hurt it caused me to do it,
A battle fought and lost, surrender part or lose all.

Your kisses now lost in the sands of time,
Each as precious as the last,
Your touch gone, like a whisper in the wind,
Given to another, leaving a longing behind.

So I sit once more, tears rolling, realization dawning,
I have my friend, the part I fought for and kept,
The lover is long gone, the promises passed,
The slate wiped clean for the sake of love.
