A Sad Refrain

Face to face
Cool wind whipping through their hair
An awkward moment
Hovers above on currents of air
As you close the distance
And study the intent in his stare
He simply asks to kiss you

Did he not understand or was he quite aware
       when making that innocent call,
  Sharing words veiled in conversations
       about happier days
awash with a hint of fall?
Like the lyrics to some blues tune
       you once performed,
          sad refrain and all.

A welcome palm
Draws the moment so near
Through the fog of desire
Tenderly urging without any fear
It’s a struggle not to give in
But you know there are still the tears
Smiling yes, you must tell him, “No”

Did he not understand or was he quite aware
       when making that innocent call,
  Sharing words veiled in conversations
       about happier days
awash with a hint of fall?
Like the lyrics to some blues tune
       you once performed,
          sad refrain and all.

Face to face
They search for pleasure
Fingertips brush his lips
As an assurance in this tender gesture
-- assurance in, “No, not now, not here. But yes” --
There are no more words
Just friendship to treasure
And he will dream about your kisses

Did he not understand or was he quite aware
       when making that innocent call,
  Sharing words veiled in conversations
       about happier days
awash with a hint of fall?
Like the lyrics to some blues tune
       you once performed,
          sad refrain and all.
