Abandoned

The strange shadows
blossomed wildly
from the faint headlights
before the dust
settled upon us.

An orange sun tinted
through midnight smoke
and we felt the heat.
The darkness meant escape
out dented doors into night.

The only light for miles
faded with the sunrise
as we walked away
through the pervading
stench of burnt rubber.

Footfalls on a rock path
and the distant creaks,
moans and hissing
was all that broke the silence
of our abandonment.
