Benevolence

What troubles you, O fair one?
I see something has stolen the sparkle from your eyes.
What force could possibly bring your heart so low?
When you smile for me, my heart fills with sunlight,
But when you are sad, so do the clouds weight me down.
Your sorrow cannot touch the beauty of your outer shell,
But the beauty of your inner soul gives that shell its life.
Seeing you now reminds me of a candle being snuffed.
The candle is still there but the light is no more.
The golden halo of your hair shines like the sun,
And I long to reach out and touch the light.
But alas, I fear I can only offer a shoulder to cry on,
Or an arm upon which you can lean, if you should grow weary.
If you confide in me, perhaps I can help.
Once upon a time, I was a knight in shining armor.
Now, I am merely a poet, a champion of words not deeds.
But, sometimes, words can be weapons of sharpest steel,
And our own thoughts the armor we so desire.
So, walk with me, my dear, through the garden in the night,
And tell me what troubles my fair young love.
