Just a girl

You didn't see her standing there as I did
hair stirring in the breeze,
pensive frown decorating her brow,
the worn faded dress
curved upon her hip
waiting on the dusty track.
Just a girl not yet a woman
but how my heart ached
when her eyes shone at my approach
only for hopes to be dashed
once more.
She smiled as I rode by
a friendly bittersweet glance
before returning to her vigil.
When the shadows deepened
over the long road
and the moon climbed in the sky
they came out and took her home.
