New Moon

I am as Jupiter.
Bold, bright, a gentle sentry in the night sky.

It is as if you are a new moon in my shadow,
A familiar, faceless friend from when the cosmos was young.
Yet, it is not you who travels round my sphere.
It is I in orbit around you, suspended strangely weightless in your power.

My renowned and boundless strength is weakened by your forces,
Stability akin to that of a lone leaf trembling on a branch in the wind.
What was once a radiant and mighty presence in the night,
Is reduced to a silhouetted memory.
And you new moon, is my connection to the light.

I reach out for you, drawn by your brilliance and realize...
When straining to touch a heavenly body,
There is a great distance from which to fall.
