smile twice

You’d smile at me in that soft warm way,
And my heart would break a little more each day.
You’d tell me of your love
And how it held more than all of the stars above.
I thought you were only looking for a prize,
Just like every other guy.
Every time I saw that smile,
I thought maybe it’d all be worthwhile
Just take a chance and look for your hidden romance.
I never looked, I never saw,
It wasn’t my biggest flaw.
Your smile has dimmed yet not gone out,
But now your smile brings me new doubt.
Am I being fooled by a charming face?
Looking for love in the wrong place?
Smile at me with your slow ease,
I’ll remember you until the end of my days.
As I gaze at those tragic stars and think of the tales they spin
I’ll always wonder what might have been.
