The Owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
In a small, rather leaky boat.
Engrossed in each other, they just couldn’t bother
If it ever would keep them afloat
And never they thought, the way that they ought,
That this way they’d only get wetter –
Though the couple cared naught for the lesson it taught
Their registrar should’ve known better,
Better,
Better,
Their registrar should’ve known better.
But the turkey was blind or just out of his mind
And so the odd couple were wedded –
The certificate signed, they were later to find
That for deep disaster they’d headed:
The Cat’s perfect poise and the Owl’s lovely voice
No lifelong true bliss could engender
And a boating day’s joys, be they ever so choice,
As a basis for love are too slender,
Slender,
Slender,
As a basis for love are too slender.
It ended one night when the blue moon was bright
Over hilltop and valley and sea –
Though their diets were right their routines were a sight
Too different to let their love be,
And they deeply regretted that they hadn’t let it
Pass by, for the hurt had been done
And they’d never forget it, so they worried and fretted
And they would be happy with none,
With none,
With none,
And they would be happy with none.
So you must be quite dense if a Cat on a fence
That is screeching its hurt to the moon
Or an Owl flying thence that hoots its immense
Sad certainties round the old ruin
Won’t spell but their crying over life’s blunt denying
Of all they held valid and true -
Never mind tears and sighing, they will keep on trying
For happiness each day anew,
Anew,
Anew,
For happiness each day anew.
