Why As a Boy He Stopped Writing Poems

"Get outta my way, Duke" Furillo said
To his center fielder chasing the ball
That flew between them and rolled to the wall
While Mickey stretching a two bagger sped
Past Pee Wee for three where Robinson stood
Ready for cleats when the Rifleman threw
A bullet that every Dodger fan knew
Would get there before Mickey Mantle would.

"That's all very good, Master Smith. But were
You to have done as directed, you shall
Have mastered iambic pentameter,"
Said Sister who didn't get it at all,
Nor a tense that made sense for that matter,
But Keats, I think, would've seen more than ball.
