Anne & Jack

'Anne, I've taken Little Jill to Roswell Park to watch the Jr. Varsity Football game they have. We should be home around 7:45. See you then. Jack' with his signature on the bottom.

"Did Mike tell you about the helicopter getting shot at?" Anne asked.

"Yeah, he was flying. I found out by watching the local news last night." Anne said as she sipped some wine so she could whine.

"He didn't call and tell you did he?" Jill saw where this was going.

"Nope, in fact when he came in and I proceeded to scare the shit out of him by turning the lamp on, I asked him how his day was and he lied to me. He told me that it was a normal day and he responded to a few calls."

"You called him on it didn't you?" After taking a sip of red wine.

"I did more than that, I slapped him. I was pissed that he lied to me. It scared me seeing that on the news. My brother who has been helping to take care of me and LJ lied to me about his safety. He lied about getting shot at by some fucking criminal who decided to unload a few dozen rounds at a helicopter." Anne was crying.

"I told him I couldn't lose him and that I need him Jill. I looked into his eyes and saw love for me Jill and then he kissed me." At that Jill was surprised. "He kissed me and I returned it Jill. I felt as if I was kissing Jim when it happened. I don't know what to do Jill!"

"Yeah, I can see why. Your brother who you love is living in your home and helping to take care of LJ and you, and you think you have fallen in love with him. That about right?" Jill said adding everything up.

"You two need to talk. I know your still feeling the loss of Jim and I'm not saying you should feel the love for Jack, but Jack has essentially filled the shoes that Jim was wearing."

"He made me dinner 2 weeks ago and he ended up letting me see a side of him that I don't believe anyone in the family has ever seen. He was married Jill. He never ever told anyone he was married because it hurt so much."

"You mean Jack was married and even your mother didn't know."

"Yeah, he got married to a woman named Nishi in Hawaii in 2004. She was a businesswoman and was in Thailand when the tsunami hit. He waited for 6 days before he found out."

"I'm sorry Anne. I honestly don't know what you should do."

Anne pulled up into her driveway right next to Jack's Edge. She got out and walked to the door. She braced herself for whatever was to come as she turned the door knob and walked in. Anne woke up to the sound of Jessica calling her name. 'Shit, they are early and oh shit'.

"Oh, were just doing fine. We figured we would surprise you by dropping in early." As Jessica hugged her mom. "Jake texted me and said he had a project to turn in today so he won't be here until tomorrow morning."

Jack came down a few minutes later and said hello to Jessica and Amy before running out the door. He may just make it to work in time.

Amy left and Jessica began a conversation.

"So mom, how have you been?" Jessica asked a few minutes after Amy left.

Anne was holding LJ. "I'm doing okay, just been busy taking care of LJ, and teaching. Jack has been here helping take care of her when I'm busy at school or out shopping. Me and Jill went shopping last Saturday and Jack was kind enough to keep her while we shopped for 4 hours."

Anne looked as Jessica and knew she couldn't hide behind LJ. Jessica was sleeping with Jake after all.

Jessica just looked at her and moved her hand to Anne's shoulder to get her attention. "Mom!" Anne looked. "Tell me!"

Anne began to cry as she felt exposed. She had just begun a relationship with Jack and her own daughter could read through her and see she had feelings.

Anne went upstairs and went into the bathroom. She just leaned against the wall and began crying and slowly eased to the floor. "Being a wife isn't all about loving him and giving him kids. It's about the journey that you both take together. That is one of the things I have lost. I miss Jim so much but I also know that he has inspired so many others while he was here." Anne cried.

"I know mom, I just want what you have. A family of my own; to be called mom or honey." Jessica said as she approached Anne. "Thank you mom, I never said it enough." Jessica kissed Anne.

"So, who is cooking the Turkey tomorrow?" Jessica asked.

"Jack is cooking the Turkey. He actually is a pretty good cook. He said he learned more in the Marines than killing, surviving and flying." Anne commented as she realized she need to take a dose of her own advice about what it is to be a family in regards to Jack.

Anne was quite restless and woke up at 5:30am and went down and into the kitchen. She was joined by Jack a few minutes later who came up behind her as she looked out the window of the kitchen.

"Jessica, I'm sorry. I should of told you yesterday about me and Jack." Jessica just looked at her mother as she said that.

"What is there to tell?" She said and walked back upstairs and into Jake's room closing the door.

Anne thought to herself, 'there was plenty to tell, but what to tell would be hard.'

Jake showed up a few hours later and the Wilson's joined for the Thanksgiving Dinner. It was a sad occasion for Anne but she hid it well. This was the first time she had been without Jim in 20 years.

They ate after sharing their various thanks. Everyone was enjoying talking and catching up, even sharing memories of Jim as times.

Anne was in the living room drinking a cup of coffee the next morning when Jessica came down and joined her while Jack and Jake were still asleep. Anne had LJ in her lap.

Anne decided to just tell Jessica. "Jessica, I'm sorry. I should have told you Wednesday that me and jack grew very close these past few months."

"I could see it mom as you had it written all over your face." Jessica commented and drank some of her coffee.

"It just kind of happened. He would never try to replace your father. I just felt lonely and Jack was there. I love him as a brother and I am beginning to love him as something more."

"Well I know this for sure, you have been through hell these past six months and I completely understand mom."

"Thank you Jess, please don't tell anyone this. Jack and I need to figure this out."

"You guys would be a good couple mom. Jack is a very nice guy. He got hit on so much on the cruise ship by married women. It was funny considering he was with Amy during those dinners. It made me laugh."

Anne smiled at that, he was a very handsome guy and had the heart to go with it. She was indeed in love with Jack.

Anne returned to her routine of teaching after the holiday weekend. Jack was working mostly night shift now and they ended up only seeing each other in the evenings for the longest time. It was around Christmas that they found themselves being together for a few days.
